About the Department
In the past couple of decades, the department of Biotechnology, Acharya Institute of Technology has been recognized as one of the best Biotechnology program in Bangalore. Department of Biotechnology is recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and affiliated by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The department was started in the year 2002 with the intake of 30 students and currently the intake has been increased to 60. It is also a recognized research centre offering M.Sc. (Engg.) by research and Ph.D. programs. The research centre has facilitated the graduation of 5 research scholars to pursue their doctoral degree. The department also has produced 2 M.Sc. (Engg.) by research scholars. The research has paved way for filing 2 patents from the department. Department has highly qualified faculty experienced in the areas of Genomics and Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Biosensors, Process Engineering, Nanobiotechnology, Food and Plant Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biomaterials and Fermentation technology. The lab infrastructure are upgraded with the grants obtained from AICTE-MODROBS. Department has been consistently accredited by NBA since 2009. The Department won the state-level best project award from KSCST 3 years in row in 2017-2018, 2018-19 and 2019-20. The department has MoUs with Merck life science Pvt.Ltd., Neo-stick Tapes Pvt.Ltd., and Acharya & BM Reddy College of Pharmacy which paved wave for collaborative research work and conducting hands-on training programs for the welfare of the student community.

It is also our pride to announce that our alumni have went on to higher studies in esteemed educational institutions both in India and abroad and are currently pursuing masters and Ph.D in IITs, NITKs, SRM University, Chennai, Queens Maryland, UK, University of Nottingham, UK, University of Munich, Germany, University of Reading, UK, University of Technology, Sydney.
The students of the department on a regular basis are encouraged to participate and present research articles and posters in national and international conferences. Many of the students have won best oral and poster presentation awards. The students also published their research findings in various national and international peer reviewed journals. The department conducts various hands-on workshops to impart technical skills to make the students industry ready. The faculty accompany the students to industrial trips once in a semester. The students showcase their final year projects in the annual “Technotsava” held at institute level and best projects are awarded with the cash prize and certificate. The students have consecutively participated in national level AICTE Chhatra Vishwakarma awards. One of the student has awarded prestigious BIRAC SITARE-GYTI award with a cash prize of Rs.1 Lakh.
About the faculty
The department is proud to have 80% of faculty with doctoral degree while the others are pursuing doctoral research. The project proposals from the department have been funded by various funding bodies such as DBT, VGST, VTU, AICTE, BIRAC and KSCST. The prolific research endeavours are showcased by the quality publications from our faculty in SCI, PubMed and SCOPUS indexed journals. We also have an industrial consultancy with Neo-stik Tapes Pvt.Ltd., which is one of the leading manufacturers of specialty foams and self-adhesive tapes and it agreed to fund equipment materials to be used in product development.

- PSO 2: Acquire skills required to investigate and obtain data from biological/chemical/biochemical systems and analyze using biostatics and bioinformatics tools.
- POS 3: Identify and design bioprocess systems to solve problems related to agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, and the environment considering the ethics and IP issue.
- Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
- Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
- Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
- Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
- Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

Duration : 4 Years
Eligibility : Pass in 10+2 / Higher Secondary (HS) / Pre University (PUC) / 'A' Level (with 12 years of schooling) or its equivalent with English as one of the languages. Should have secured a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and any one of the following subject: Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Electronics.
